Laura Hood, who teaches the class at Temple Israel, said the project will help students grasp the scope of the tragedy. The 14 students have collected 65,000 pennies so far and are seeking donations from residents citywide. (more…)

Brooklyn, NY - Dueling Rabbis Struggle Over Who Gets to Spread the Faith

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Brooklyn, NY - A turf war has erupted between two Lubavitch’r rabbis claiming dibs on the rapidly gentrifying brownstone neighborhoods that surrounds the Atlantic Yards area.
In one corner is Rabbi Ari Kirschenbaum, who showed up in Prospect Heights three years ago to revive a decrepit Orthodox synagogue in the neighborhood. His rival is Rabbi Tali Frankel, who is backed by his wife’s powerful uncle, Rabbi Shimon Hecht of Park Slope. After arriving eighteen months ago, he began holding events advertised as being sponsored by “Chabad of Prospect Heights”—though Kirschenbaum is the neighborhood’s sole officially recognized shaliach. Rescuers search for plane in Indonesia

Monday, January 1st, 2007
ZAKKI HAKIM
Associated Press

An Indonesian passenger plane carrying 102 people disappeared in stormy weather Monday, and rescuers were sent to the area where the Boeing 737-400 may have crashed in what would be the country’s second major transportation disaster in four days.

Adam Air Flight KI-574 was on a two-hour flight from Indonesia’s main island of Java to Manado, on the northern tip of Sulawesi, one of the largest islands in the archipelago. Just over half of the flight path was over the Java Sea, the Maluku Sea and other smaller bodies of water, with the remainder over Sulawesi Island. (more…)

PRO-CON: Should airlines ban clerics who disrupt flights? NO

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Muslims are required by their faith to pray to Mecca five times a day. There is nothing sinister or criminal about people peacefully carrying out the obligations of their faith. Airlines that single out praying Muslims and deny them flight privileges permanently are no different than the five-and-dime stores that once prevented black people from eating at luncheonette counters.

It is as unthinkable to ban praying Muslims from a flight, as it would be to deny boarding to a group of praying Hasidic Jews. Both sects engage in public group prayers. Both are exercising their constitutional rights as U.S. citizens.

Persecution of religious minorities by the majority is nothing new in the United States. Nor is an attempt by the majority to link religious minorities to some grandiose and evil global plot against America.

We must ensure that the United States does not fall victim to their militaristic designs by becoming an intolerant religious war zone.
